Texas Travels

Yes, we did see some of Katrina's damage. Hard to believe after all this time, some homes had not been touched as far as repairs go. A lot of the highway across Louisiana is elevated over the swampy ground. We had a nice sunny day through Louisiana and the first part of Texas, but it went downhill from there. We had rain, drizzle and fog driving to our campground NW of San Antonio. Medina Lake Thousand Trails is in the hill country of Texas. Our campsite had a view of the lake, but when we arrived, it was so foggy we couldn't tell if the lake was a mile across or 2 feet across! We had been told to get some corn to feed the deer at this campground, but were not prepared for the number of deer and how tame they were! As soon as they hear a door close, they start swarming in to see who has corn for them. One wouldn't even let us get the corn out of the back of the jeep before she was sticking her head in the bag!

We took a drive to Padre Island National Seashore outside of Corpus Christi, TX in hopes of doing some birdwatching. But it was windy and only 50, so it wasn't too pleasant to spend much time out of the jeep. We did see some terns, pelicans, seagulls and a great blue heron. There were a couple of other shorebirds that I haven't identified yet. We also spotted a couple of sandhill cranes on the way out of the park. Glenn got to drive on the beach which he always gets a kick out of doing. We got a bottle of Gulf water, some sand and shells for Caitlin's "collection". We found some areas we could park the motorhome and camp in site of the ocean, so maybe someday we will do that.

Yesterday after lunch, we took a drive through the Texas Hill Country. Very pretty country! We fell in love with an area that runs along the Guadalupe River. Tubing is popular in the summer here. We finished our drive at the local Bass Pro Shop where we met Linda and Gene Barron for dinner (they have a great restaurant in this store). We first met this couple on our New Mexico Caravan in '06. It was great to see them again!

So today we are traveling across I-10 through the scrubby part of Texas. We will stop overnight about 200 miles shy of the Texas/NM border and then drive on into Las Cruces, NM on Sunday.
